An important humor magazine, founded by a dissatisfied Puck (859) artist James Albert Wales, and later revitalized by Republican party money in response to Puck’s effective attacks on James .G. Blaine, their 1884 presidential candidate. It is liberally illustrated with political cartoons and evolved into a monthly of smaller size in a format similar to Life (921). Early issues have graphic racist satire.
