An important literary magazine eidted by, among others, Charles Fenno Hoffman, Timothy Flint and most successfully by Lewis Gaylord Clark. It contains first printings of many prominent authors, including Washington Irving (between 1839 – 1841) Longfellow, Hawthorne, Bryant and James Fenimore Cooper. “Mocha Dick” by J. N. Reynolds appeared in May 1839. It paid considerable attention to humor, travel and the west, including the first printing of Parkman’s “Overland Trail” in v. 29 – 33. After v 1, the title is “Knickerbocker”. The last few volumes are scarce. Later wrappers are blue. Listed in ULS, and after July 1865, as “Foederal American Monthly”. |
