Diocletian “Dio” Lewis was America’s earliest guru of physical culture. This rare volume (7 listings in ULS) is important for a regular column by transcendentalist Elizabeth Palmer Peabody (Aesthetic Papers) on the KIndergarten, her earliest writing on the subject. There are also contributions by her sister, Mrs. Thomas Mann, and Florence Nightingale on nursing.
