A weekly sporting journal, owned and edited by George Wilkes, most notable as an important repository of articles of early baseball (see BB1) and horse racing. This volume includes the scarce frontispiece, a color-lithograph of a racehorse, and is in the original publisher’s binding. V. 3 no. 2 features the earliest engraving of a baseball game. No earlier reference to baseball in a magazine has been located. Listed in ULS as “Porter’s Spirit of the Times; A Chronicle of the Turf, Field Sports, Literature and the Stage.” Merged into “Wilke’s Spirit of the Times” later “Spirit of the Times and Sportsman.” |
