A “well-rounded, comprehensive monthly with a liberal outlook,” edited by Theodore L. Flood. It grew out of the Chautauqua movement, a combination of popular education from concerts, dramatic performances and lectures, “to be tied with the prescribed reading courses of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle.” Mott cites a preliminary number in September 1880. Merged into “Independent.” |
