Title: | Columbian Monthly Magazine, or Monthly Miscellany |
Category: | 18th Century, Americana |
Volume: | 1 |
Issue: | 13 |
Date: | September 1787 |
Published in: | Philadelphia, PA |
One of the two earliest printings of the U.S. Constitution. Internal evidence suggests this printing was issued early in the week of September 23. An advertisement on the wrapper of this issue is for “American Museum” and lists the publication date for the September 1787 issue as October 1. An advertisement on the inner front wrapper of “American Museum” for September 1787 is for “Columbian Magazine” and states ‘this day is published…”The Columbian Magazine,”‘ suggesting that both magazines were published on the same day. It would therefore be difficult to assign priority to either of these printings. The “New Haven Gazette and Connecticut Magazine” printing is dated September 27. Only one other contemporary magazine printing of the Constitution (Worcester Magazine) has been identified. |
