Initially a creditable general literary magazine which, after a brief stay in Rochester, moved to New York and floundered, until acquired by John Brisben Walker, who in 1892, made it one of the most influential general-interest illustrated magazines. In 1905 it was sold to William Randolph Hearst, who continued and expanded it, employing his characteristic flair for sensationalism. In 1925, it combined with Hearst’s International. It has been published as Cosmopolitan since 1952. Under the wing of editor, Helen Gurley Brown, “Cosmo” became and remains an influential, trend-setting ladies’ magazine. |
