An important literary-oriented miscellany, notable for the editorship of and first appearances by Mark Twain between 1869 an 1872, for its association with Henry James, and contributions by and about Walt Whitman. It was conceived to compete with “Atlantic Monthly” and ‘the feeling of New York out to have a monthly of its own.’ A serial by General Custer of his Civil War memoirs was aborted by his death. Custer had earlier contributed a series entitled “Life on the Plains.” Merged into “Atlantic Monthly” (645). Also, v. 1, octavo, May 1 – August 15 1866. |
