A very successful, widely circulated ladies’ miscellany, illustrated with engravings and hand-colored fashion plates, most notable for the long-standing editorship of Sarah J. Hale. It maintained a consistently moral and sentimental tone, publishing ‘nothing having the slightest appearance of indelicacy.’ This volume contains three original Poe appearances. The November 1859 issue contains the first paper doll in an American magazine. After the 1840’s, with “Peterson’s,” the most commonly located titles of their era.
