Initially, an undistinguished and drab semimonthly family magazine, it began to thrive after a change in editorship in 1898, with improved management, appearance and content. After its acquisition in 1911 by William Randolph Hearst, by employing top-rate serial fiction, important non-fiction and innovative marketing, it evolved into one of the twentieth century’s most important and widely read ladies’ magazines.
