An important weekly illustrated children’s magazine. The fourth periodical published by Harper Brothers, it drew upon their ample resources and reflected the quality of its sister publications. The tone and format resembled “St. Nicholas” (824), with an appeal toward the prosperous and upwardly mobile and against ‘the evils of sensational literature for the young.’ Later issues are notable for the prose and illustration of Howard Pyle. Listed in ULS as “Harper’s Round Table” (1065), the title of the second series. |
