The first significant children’s magazine. A moralistic but not religious monthly edited by Lydia Marie Child, which effectively combined didacticism and entertainment. Nsv. 5 (September/October 1830) contains the first printing of Sarah Josepha Hale’s “Mary Had a Little Lamb”. Superseded by “Juvenile Miscellany” edited by Sarah J. Hale.
