“Uncle Sam” first appeared in 1787. In time he came to replace “Brother Jonathan” as a national symbol. The first illustration of him in his now familar uniform appeared in the 1860’s, but by far the most well-known image of him is the one created by James Montgomery Flagg, first appearing here, captioned, ‘What are you doing for preparedness?”. The February 15th, 1917 issue, also collected, and the most famous poster, which were taken from this magazine cover, are captioned “I want you.” The poster brings over $1000 in good condition. The magazines are scarcer. |
