With Munsey’s (986) and Cosmopolitan (946), the most important magazine of its type. As Mott writes, it “set the pattern for the golden age of ten-cent illustrated magazines, and was marked by freshness, brilliance and abundance of life in all departments.” It was particularly distinctive for its biographical articles and muckraking. Its fiction featured both English and American authors, most recognizably Stevenson, Kipling, Stephen Crane and Joel Chandler Harris. This first publication of short-story of O. Henry is in the issue for December 1899. Merged into Smart Set (1087). Listed in ULS and after Je 1928 as New McClure’s Magazine. |
