Born in London and trained for the Church, freethinker Gilbert Vale (1788-1866) emigrated to the United States and quickly joined the Free Inquirers’ Association while lecturing widely in New York and Brooklyn on navigation, and patenting a terrestrial globe and celestial sphere for the use of teaching astronomy.
