A scholarly, provincial, dignified, frequently ponderous but highly important literary journal conceived and originally edited by William Tudor. It was appreciated as the most intellectual magazine in America and was the first to achieve an international reputation. The issue for September 1817 contains the first printing of “Thanatopsis” by William Cullen Bryant, the first great American poem. It contains many important contributions by Bryan, as well as significant appearances of Lowell, Emerson and Longfellow.
