A weekly until January 1871, then a monthly, published by Lee and Shepard. it was edited by William Taylor Adams, a leading author of juvenile fiction, whose pseudonym was Oliver Optic, who acted as both school-master and storyteller. It featured adventure stories for boys, domestic tales for girls and other miscellany. The volumes for 1868 and 1869 contain illustrations by Thomas Nast and a section entitled “The Playground”, which features regular, detailed reports of baseball.
