Tourgee, a noted “interpreter of the Negro’s dilemma in the post-bellum South.” As Chielens writes, it failed due to the editor’s “romantic view of life and literature in an age of objective, pessimistic determinism.” Issue 1 contains a contribution by Oscar Wilde.
