It is best known for its editorship by Bret Harte and appearances by Harte and Mark Twain, as well as articles on western culture. Volume one contains all of the four Twain appearances (July, August, September, October 1868). “Grizzly Papers”, by Ambrose Bierce, appeared serially from January to June 1871.
