Initially a fashion magazine and pattern journal, in 1897 it was renamed McCall’s Magazine: Queen of Fashion. It remained a cheap fashion magazine and succeeded, under the direction of James Henry Ottley, with outstanding illustration and a high volume of advertising, sprinkled with undistinguished fiction. In 1913 it was sold, and, after a few unsettled years, it added more features and better known writers, and succeeded in appealing nationally to middle-class American families. In ULS and after Ag 1897 as McCall’s. |
