Title: | Vanity Fair |
Category: | Humor, Satire |
Volume: | 1 |
Issue: | 1 |
Date: | December 1859 |
Published in: | New York, NY |
The most important humor magazine of its era containing, among others, illustrations by H. L. Stephens and Frank Bellew. It was edited by Charles G. Leland and Artemus Ward, with content dominated by puns, letters in comic vernacular, socio-political commentary, and protest by the leading comic writers and ‘Bohemians’ of New York. Its centrist politics, shaky financial status and overt antagonism toward Blacks hastened its demise. The most commonly located of the comic periodicals of its day, it bears no relations to the later magazine of the same title. Volume 7 is scarce. |
