The most successful early western magazine, a monthly edited by James Hall. These are the first volumes published under this title, containing early and important examples of ‘the literature of the west’. It also published articles on travel, a series on Ohio history and a contest-winning article in April 1834, entitled “A New England Sketch” by Harriet Beecher (later Stowe). Its predecessor, “Illinois Monthly Magazine”, which lasted for one year, was the first magazine published in that state. |
