“The Yellow Kid” was the first comic strip character and the first to be featured in an American periodical. This magazine, with a pictorial cover, is essentially the first “Comic book.” Only the very rare first six issues use R. F. Outcault’s “Kid” on the cover. The content is mostly literary. “The Yellow Kid” was at the center of the sensationalistic circulation war between prominent publishers Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, which gave rise to the term “Yellow journalism.” |
