Initially, an eclectic weekly ‘journal of choice reading’ of reprinted foreign fiction, edited by Thomas Bailey Aldrich and published by Ticknor and Fields, who also published “Atlantic Monthly” (645). The second series changed its format in an unsuccessful attempt to compete with “Harper’s Weekly” (648), by taking on more illustration, including some by Winslow Homer, and is notable for its association with Bret Harte. The last two series reverted to the old format and soon merged into “Littell’s Living Age” (462), later “Living Age”. Also, nsv. 1 no. 1 – 26, quarto, January-June 1872. |
